Mississauga, ON – CarePoint Health (CPH) is excited to announce a partnership with Dr. Fiona Thomas from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), following her award of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Engage Grant.

Dr. Thomas’s research project, “Bridging the Gap: Leveraging Community-Academic Partnerships to Improve Evidence-Based Psychological Interventions for Diverse Communities,” aims to evaluate and enhance the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) program across Halton, Brampton, and Mississauga.

This collaboration will explore factors affecting engagement in mental health services, including barriers to access and reasons for client disengagement. By integrating insights from clients and clinicians, the project seeks to improve the effectiveness of OSP and expand access to mental health care for marginalized communities. This research, anticipated to conclude by March 2025, will be a significant step toward informing targeted interventions and clinician training in the region.

Research Supported by SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant.

Think about it - when was the last time you saw a Black woman portrayed as anything but a pillar of strength? This "Strong Black Woman" stereotype might seem positive on the surface, but it comes with a heavy price tag.
